November Book du Mois: The Sentence by Louise Erdrich
Featured Book

The Sentence A Novel
"Dazzling. . . . A hard-won love letter to readers and to booksellers, as well as a compelling story about how we cope with pain and fear, injustice and illness. One good way is to press a beloved book into another's hands. Read The Sentence and then do just that."--USA Today, Four Stars
In this New York Times bestselling novel, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich creates a wickedly funny ghost story, a tale of passion, of a complex marriage, and of a woman's relentless errors.
Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading "with murderous attention," must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief, astonishment, isolation, and furious reckoning.
The Sentence begins on All Souls' Day 2019 and ends on All Souls' Day 2020. Its mystery and proliferating ghost stories during this one year propel a narrative as rich, emotional, and profound as anything Louise Erdrich has written.
This book will be available for purchase at the event.

About the Venue

Cavalier House Books · Lafayette
John and Michelle Cavalier acquired Beausoleil Books in the summer of 2024, bringing Cavalier House Books to Lafayette. At this location, CHB has worked to honor the former bookshop's legacy by building on what Beausoleil had begun in 2020. CHB's roots are in Denham Springs, where the business began in 2005 before opening its storefront in 2009. By 2024, the Cavaliers became a part of the Downtown Lafayette community by opening their second location. They have built their Lafayette team with Acadiana at the forefront, with John and Michelle even partnering with the Alliance Française to take French language lessons in order to build relationships with Francophone publishers and increase CHB's French language offerings. Lafayette has offered a warm welcome to the Cavaliers, including further connecting Michelle to her Cajun heritage and bringing her back to the language her grandparents lost. It is their hope to reinvest in the city all that has been granted them!

Meet & Greet with Leslie Helakoski
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT: Leslie Helakoski will be at CHB Lafayette on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. to celebrate her latest book Fake Gnus! Fake Gnus follows kid reporter Scoop Jackson as he asks readers to consider what is fake news and what is fact, while looking for the gnus — pronounced nooz — that have escaped from their pen at the zoo.The gnu pen is empty! So where are the gnus? There are many different clues to follow, and it’s up to Scoop to decide if the evidence he hears and sees is true … or not! Someone tells Scoop they saw the gnus eating ice cream in Central Park. But this news site says they’re climbing the Empire State Building. And here’s a photo showing the gnus at a dairy farm. Can all of these sources be real gnus? Or are they fake gnus? Scoop reminds us that a fact is something that can be proven to be true. With every new source, Scoop always checks the facts! This tongue-in-cheek introduction to fake news asks kids to think critically about what they see and hear from media sources. The book includes a quiz and an author’s note that touches on AI and expands on the concept of reputable sources. Come meet Leslie and get your copy of Fake Gnus signed during the event! Reserve your spot and order your copy through Bon Temps Tix! Fake Gnus is available to order as your ticket until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 7. Copies will be available at the event!
